What is a color analysis or color consultation?

A personal color analysis shows people which colors best harmonize with their skin tone, hair and eyes colors. The method has evolved since the 1980s and is continuously being improved.

How does a color analysis work?

During a color consultation, you will sit in front of a mirror while I hold specific cloths (technically called drapes) in certain colors under your face. Together we observe how your natural coloring (complexion, eye, and hair colors) reacts to the different shades. You will see yourself which color types suit you best.

Which method do you use for color consulting?

After using the 12 seasons method for years, since summer 2025 I have been using the 4×4 color analysis method, which includes 16 color types:

• Summer: Light Soft Summer, Dark Soft Summer, Cool Summer, Light Summer
• Winter: Bright Winter, Cool Winter, Soft Dark Winter, Dark Winter
• Autumn: Light Soft Autumn, Dark Soft Autumn, Dark Autumn, Warm Autumn
• Spring: Soft Light Spring, Light Spring, Warm Spring, Bright Spring

How can I prepare for a color consultation?

You don’t need to do anything, except you should avoid getting suntanned. To determine your season, I need to be able to analyze your coloring in its natural state.

Is it allowed to perform a color analysis in the evening or under artificial light?

Since daylight provides a full light spectrum and ensures accurate color recognition, color consultations are generally conducted in natural daylight. If daylight is insufficient due to weather conditions, a specially designed full-spectrum LED lamp suitable for professional color consultations is used. Conventional artificial light sources can distort the color representation of the skin, making an accurate analysis impossible. My studio is located on the third floor of a building built on a small hill, which provides excellent natural lighting.

Do you conduct online color consultations or based on photos?

No, only in person. An accurate color analysis can only be done in person and with natural daylight. Any kind of technology, such as cameras, screens, and artificial light, can distort the color analysis.

Can a color consultation also take place at my home?

That is basically possible, but I cannot guarantee that we will have the same lighting conditions at your home. In addition, travel costs will be charged separately.

Is it okay if I wear a little makeup or jewelry during a color analysis?

No, because it is important that I can analyze your natural colors to find the right color palette.

Am I allowed to wear glasses during the color consultation?

This should also be avoided. If you need visual aid, you should wear clear contact lenses for the color analysis. Your face should be clear from any artificial colors, and you need to be able to see yourself clearly. I don’t do the analysis alone, but you are also part of the process.

Am I allowed to use self-tanner before a color consultation? No, even a small amount of self-tanner can significantly change your skin tone. If you regularly use self-tanner, make sure that no traces are visible during the color analysis.

Can also a natural tan affect personal color analysis?

Yes. Although a natural tan does not change your undertone as much as, for example, foundation or self-tanner, it still makes it more difficult to determine your natural undertone and chroma accurately. Therefore, if your skin tans in the sun, I recommend analyzing your coloring when you have as little natural tan as possible, such as in the fall and winter.

Can redness or hyperpigmentation affect the color analysis?

The color analysis will take such skin blemishes into account, and I will show you how to soften them using specific colors and patterns from your palette.

What should I do if my hair is dyed?

Your natural hair color is an essential factor for assessing undertone and contrast. Even subtle strands can affect the accuracy of your analysis. If your hair is dyed, even minimally, it must be covered during your color analysis.

What about gray or white hair?

As we age, our coloring becomes softer and loses color saturation. However, it is definitely possible to determine a person’s season and the right color palette based on gray or white hair, without knowing their previous hair color. I will carry out your color analysis with and without a headscarf, and find the right color palette and possible hair colors (if desired).

What should I wear during a color consultation?

Ideally, a low-cut top in a neutral color (e.g., white). If you don’t have a white T-shirt, I will cover your clothes with a white cloth.

Do personal colors change with age?

Yes, your coloring will change over the years, and it is quite possible that your best colors at 75 won’t be the same as at 35. For most people, slightly less intense colors suit them better as they get older. However, your color type will not change significantly.

The coloring of children and teenagers up to puberty can change, though. For this reason, a color analysis is only recommended and useful for fully grown adults.

How does a body shape analysis work?

In a body shape analysis, also called image archetype analysis or body type analysis, all your proportions and body parts are measured and your body type is identified. Based on this data, I will show you which clothing styles best accentuate your body.

What is the advantage of combining a body shape analysis with a color consultation?

This is a complete style consultation so that you will learn how to emphasize your silhouette and finally avoid bad purchases using colors and clothing models. It is a good way to build a sustainable and functional wardrobe.

How does a facial analysis work?

In a facial analysis, I examine the relative proportions of your facial features such as eyes, nose, chin, and temples from a 3D perspective. Your face shape is categorized into one of the shape groups, e.g., round, oval, square, triangular, heart, diamond, and any possible asymmetry is identified. Depending on your needs and wishes, I provide recommendations for haircut, style, glasses, makeup, and other tips to flatter your face.

What are the advantages of a combined facial shape analysis and color consultation?

With this consultation, you will learn how to best highlight your face. You will find out which colors suit you, which haircuts and hair colors suit your face shape and skin tone, and what to consider when choosing glasses and jewelry in terms of shape and color.
